The beatification of Jerzy Popieluszko is a “great gift to a great nation”, Archbishop Amato said during his homily to the faithful on Pilsudski Square.

Father Jerzy was Beatified on June 6, 2010 in Warsaw Poland.  Beatification in the Catholic Church is defined as “the official act of the pope whereby deceased person is declared to be enjoying the happiness of heaven, and therefore a proper subject of religious honor and public cult in certain places.” according to the dictionary.  The process however is a bit more withstanding and lengthy.

Blessed Father Jerzy Popieluszko’s body was found bound and gagged when they dredged the Vistula River near Wloclawek on  Oct. 30, 1984. Father Jerzy had been missing for 11 days, the beloved priest had been finally silenced. Father Jerzy was known for his outspoken sermons against communism and in support of human rights.
